童話故事-小巨人
'The Bunyans', written by Audrey Wood, illustrated by David Shannon ISBN 0-590-48089-8 You know that Paul Bunyan was taller than a redwood tree and stronger than fifty grizzly bears but did you know he had a wife and two children who helped him create some of the most striking natural wonders of North America? 01 - Cover 02 - Title page 03 - In the early days of our country, the mighty logger, Paul Bunyan, and his great blue ox named Babe cleared the land for the settlers so that farms and cities could spring up. 04 - One day he felt a great pounding shaking the earth. He fashioned a torch from an acre of dry cane and climbed into an enormous hole in the side of a hill in Kentucky. 05 - He came to a large cavern glistening with crystals where he saw a gigantic woman banging a behemoth pickax. It was love at first sight. "I'm Carrie McIntie", the woman said. She had been digging all day trying to find her lucky wishbone which had fallen down a crack in the earth. Paul said, "I've got one too. Marry me, Carrie, and we'll share mine." 06 - They were married in the enormous crystal chamber that Carrie had carved. After the ceremony, folks began to call it Mammoth Cave. the giantess had dug more than 200 miles, making it the longest cave in the world. 07 - Paul and Carrie settled down on a farm in Maine. They had two children; their jumbo boy, named Little Jean 08 - and their gigantic girl, named Teeny. 09 - One morning, at breakfast, Teeny was wrestling with her big purple puma called Slink and accidentally dumped a silo of syrup on her head. Her hair was so sweet, bears crawled into it and burrowed deep in her curls. "We'll need a forceful shower of water to get rid of those varmints!" Ma Bunyan declared. 10 - Pa placed Teeny on Babe and went to the Niagara River where he scooped out a huge hole in the middle of the river bed. As the great river roared down into the deep hole, Teeny cried out, "Niagara falls!", while the pesky bears were washed down stream. 11 - Babe 12 - Little Jean was set down in a barren canyon to play for the day while his pa worked. On picking him up, he couldn't believe his eyes. Little jean had carved the canyon into a wonderland of fanciful shapes. Pa got so tongue-tied, he said, "That's a mighty brice nanyon, coy. I mean a mighty nice canyon, boy!" To this day the canyon is known as Bryce Canyon. 13 - Little Jean's shoes were full of sand so he sat down to empty them. The sand blew away on the eastern wind and settled down a state away, covering a valley ten miles long and sand dunes 800 feet high. That's how the Great Sand dunes of Colorado came to be. 14 - Teeny riding on the backs of two whales. 15 - Little Jean carving out fifty zigzag miles of the California coast. Ma exclaimed, "What's the big idea, sir!?" From that time on, the area was known as Big Sur. 16 - Ma Bunyan built the Rocky Mountains as a barrier to remind her children not to wander off too far. 17 - When they wanted to explore, Ma Bunyan would call out, "Now don't cross the Continental Divide, children!" 18 - Ma Bunyan used her pickax to make a geyser in Wyoming that blew hot water every hour on the hour for a steady supply of hot water when they went camping. Teeny named the geyser Old Faithful. 19 - When the kids grew up and left home, Ma and Pa Bunyan retired to the wilderness area 20 - where they still live happily. 21 - Teeny hitched a ride to England on a whale and became a famous fashion designer. Her colorful skirts made from air balloons and her breezy blouses cut from ship sails were a sensation at the first World's Fair in London. 22 - Little Jean traveled to Venice where he studied astronomy and art. Every day the gondoliers would take their passengers down the Grand Canal to watch the giant artist chisel his marble sculptures. 23 - Little Jean decided to explore new lands, took two great jumps, one flying leap, and bounded up into outer space. In 1976, a spacecraft named Viking I was sent to study Mars. One mysterious photo looked like a face carved out of colossal rock. Some think the famous "Martian face" is the spitting image of Little Jean Bunyan. If so, who knows what he's up to on other planets. 24 - 'Only time will tell.'
